Visiting here, there, and somewhere: Multi‐locality and the geographies of transnational family visiting

Abstract For transnational families, visits represent an opportunity to temporarily punctuate the geographical distance that separates them from significant others in everyday life. Drawing on data mapping‐interviews conducted with older skilled migrants Abu Dhabi, UAE, this paper is concerned how visiting harnessed sustain a sense of family togetherness at later stage life course. The discussion contributes migration scholarship return and by relatives destination but also draws attention third dimension visiting; meet‐ups space—a location neither country origin nor destination. Hence, I propose explicitly spatial, relational conceptualization visits, arranged around multi‐local framework: visit (‘there’); receiving (‘here’); in‐between space (‘somewhere’). In so doing, places spotlight geographies visiting, drawing dynamic way which practice enacted
